A two-sport athlete with the Lions having also starred for the baseball team, Joe Bergondo is focusing solely on football in his final year at TCNJ. Last year, he emerged as the Lions’ leading on special teams after excelling on both kick and punt returns. He finished the season ranked fifth in the league with his 20.7 yards per return on kickoffs and sixth in punt returns with an 8.0 yards per return on punts. He amassed 652 all-purpose yards, which was second highest among all players in 2003.

This fall, he has scene action on all sides of the ball, be it as a receiver, a return specialist and even as a punter. He has collected 192 all-purpose yards, while ranking third on the team in scoring with 18 points on three receiving touchdowns. Bergondo has also racked up 775 yards punting on 24 punts and is averaging 32.3 yards per punt. He has a season-long of 47 yards and ranks fifth in the league in punting, while also ranking fifth in punt returns as well. He enters today’s contest with 856 career all-purpose yards.

During his baseball career with the Lions, he played in 113 games while batting .288. He added 72 hits and 34 career RBI’s for the Lions, while playing in the infield. He also had 2.50 ERA in five career appearances on the mound for TCNJ. A year ago, he batted .375 and he tapped as the Lions’ 2003 recipient of the Coaches’ Award.

Scholastically, he excelled in baseball, football and basketball at JFK Memorial, serving as a team captain in both football and basketball. He earned all-county, all-conference and all-division honors in football after helping the 1999 team capture the division championships. As a member of the team in 1998 and 1999, JFK also participated in the state playoffs.

A TCNJ Scholar-Athlete, he earned a spot on the 2004 NJAC All-Academic Honorable Mention Team and is a former National Honor Society and French Honor Society honoree. He is majoring in biology education at TCNJ.
