Bobby Acosta is the offensive coordinator following his stint as a wide receivers coach for the Lions. He has been involved in coaching footbal ever since graduating from Rowan University in 1999, where he was a defensive back.
Acosta's responsbilities include setting annual programs for players with the objective of reaching their greatest potential athletically and academically, teaching the fundamental skills of the game, assisting in practice preparation and game-plans, and recruiting in the New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania regions.
The Lions are coming off an exceptional season in 2011, finishing with a 7-3 overall record. Their biggest win was a 27-21 victory over Montclair State University, who was ranked sixth at the time. Quarterback Jay Donoghue ranked this in the conference in total yards per game with 216 as TCNJ's offense averaged 24.6 points per game.
Seven players for the Lions' squad earned All-NJAC honors. Defensive back Shawn Brown become the fifth player in program history to be named to the American Football Coach's Association First Team All-American.
During the 2009 season, Acosta's offense scored the most points in a single-season in program history. The Lions compiled 309 points on offense, including a 67-point output against Morrisville State University, which is also a school record. The offense also set a record for the most yards in a game compiling 708 total yards of offense against FDU-Florham.
The 373 yards per game TCNJ averaged was very balanced, chewing up 164.3 yards per game on the ground and 208.7 yards through the air. Quarterback Chris James set school records for career completions (464) and passing yards (5,871) during the 2009 season. The Lions also ranked first in the NJAC in passer efficiency.
The summer of 2010 was a busy one for Acosta as he worked at the Cleveland Browns preseason camp along with head coach Eric Mangini as part of a prestigious program that provides mentoring and professional development to college coaches. He also worked a New York Jets camp with tight end coach Mike Devlin, a camp at Lafayette College, and a quarterbacks and receivers camp held at TCNJ.
Acosta's background in coaching is comprehensive. He was a tight ends coach at the University of Delaware, defensive backs coach at Rowan as well as a head football coach at Monmouth Regional High School and Marlboro High School. He completed a coaching internship program with the New York Jets in May, 2008, and was on the Blue Hens staff that helped develop current NFL quarterback Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens.
Acosta is also an assistant coach for the men's and women's track teams at TCNJ. He works with javelin throwers during the spring season.
A certifed Health and Exercise Science teacher, Acosta is also in charge of the TCNJ athletics weight training facility.
Bobby is the twin brother of Jason Acosta. Jason is a graduate of TCNJ and played wide receiver for the Lions from 1995-1999. He was a First Team All NJAC / All ECAC selection in 1999 with 36 receptions and three touchdown catches.
