Spittal was the Head Football Coach at Group 5 power Eastern High School in Voorhees,  New Jersey from 2000-2013. The Vikings made the playoffs in eight of those years: four time quarterfinalist (2004, 2006, 2008, 2009); two time semi-finalist (2007, 2012); finalist in 2013 and state champion in 2003.

Notable players coached at Eastern:  Phil Trautwein, who started at tackle on two National Championship Teams at Florida; Logan Ryan, Rutgers and current  Super Bowl winning cornerback for the New England Patriots; Eli Apple who is a current  National Championship cornerback at The Ohio State University; Tom Flacco, youngest brother of Ravens QB Joe, is a quarterback at Western Michigan.

Prior to his head coaching stint, Spittal was the offensive coordinator at Eastern from 1992-99 and Pemberton Township High School (NJ) 1985-1991. While an assistant, he coached two eventual NFL first round draft picks ( Irv Smith TE  Pemberton-Notre Dame-New Orleans and Chris Canty DB – Eastern -Kansas State-New England Patriots). At Eastern, he also coached Penn State graduate Adam Taliaferro, who’s book, A Miracle in the Making, recorded his amazing comeback from a spinal cord injury during his freshman season at Penn State.

Spittal also received his Master’s Degree while a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Temple University from 1983-85 under current Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians.

Spittal’s first high school coaching job was as an assistant at Woodbury High School  (NJ) from 1981-83.

While finishing his undergraduate degree at Lock Haven State College, he was a student assistant in 1980.

Spittal, a quarterback, led his Lock Haven team to its only Pennsylvania Conference Football Championship in 1979 while being named first team all- conference. He entered Lock Haven Football’s Hall of Fame in 2011 along with his Head Coach Jack Fisher.

Spittal graduated from Forest Hills High School in Sidman, PA in 1976 and played for PA Hall of Fame coach Don Bailey.
Spittal has two children, Matthew 29 who played football at the University of Delaware and Meghan, 27, who played field hockey at Lock Haven.
