TCNJ earns another NJAC Tennis Championship

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey’s women’s tennis team hosted both the Cougars of Kean University and the Pioneers of William Paterson University on Sunday afternoon. TCNJ came away with two wins, both 9-0 on the day. With the pair of victories, TCNJ wrapped up the College’s 24th consecutive NJAC Women’s Tennis Championship and extended the NJAC win streak in the process to 116 matches. The Lions have never lost an NJAC match dating back to the fall of 1982 when women’s tennis was introduced as a league sport.

The Lions now stand at 5-0 overall and in the NJAC on the fall, while Kean drops to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the NJAC and William Paterson University in now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.

TCNJ wins 116th straight NJAC Match and collects 24th straight NJAC Championship with win.

 

TCNJ’s rookie Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) recorded a pair of wins as she won at both first singles and first doubles. In singles this fall, she is now 15-1 overall and has won 12 consecutive singles matches. The NJAC’s Rookie of the Week for the past three weeks, Shtemberg defeated William Paterson’s freshman Evelyn Tam (Paterson, NJ/Passaci County Tech) 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match. Shtemberg teamed with junior Christina Contrafatto (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) to win the first doubles match as well, 8-0 as they beat the Pioneer’s senior Evonne Tan (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and senior Alima Williams (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling Regional). The Lion pair has now won nine straight matches together and stand at 13-2 together this fall.

TCNJ’s rookie Stefanie Haar (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) was the Lions’ lone double winner in singles and doubles as the Lions mixed up their lineup in the two matches. Haar won both her singles matches on Sunday 6-0, 6-0, while playing at the No. 2 and No. 3 spot in the lineup. She teamed at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with senior Kristen Turturiello (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston) and sophomore Haley Kutner (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight Englewood) as they were double winners as well.
