Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team scored once in each half to win its fifth straight game as the Lions beat Johns Hopkins University 2-0 in a match-up to highly-ranked teams on Monday night at Lions’ Stadium.
The Lions, which entered the game ranked fourth, improved to 7-0-2 on the year while the 11th-ranked Blue Jays slipped to 8-2. The loss also ended Johns Hopkins’ five-game winning streak.
The Lions netted the only goal they would need with 10:30 remaining in the opening half as freshman Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) tucked a shut under the cross bar on a feed from classmate Kristina Shemming (Cranbury, NJ/West Windsor South).
The Blue Jays did have their chances to pull even late in the second half with three corner kicks in the final five minutes and Jessie McKenzie (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) came within inches of scoring the equalizer rolling a shot just past the near post.
McDonough then iced the game with just 48 seconds remaining in the second half to ice the win. With the two goals, McDonough now has four on the season.
TCNJ goalie Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) added to her growing streak of not allowing a goal as the freshman posted two saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Clarke has not allowed a goal in the last 779:12.
In goal for the Blue Jays, Kerry Hamilton (Rockville Center, NY/South Side) finished with four saves.
TCNJ will have a break in the schedule until Saturday when the Lions host New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Kean University at 1 p.m., while the Blue Jays head to Washington College on Wednesday.
