Big second half carries Lions past Mary Washington

Box Score

Ewing, NJ… Eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team exploded for seven goals in the second half as the Lions blanked the University of Mary Washington in convincing fashion scoring a 9-0 win on Saturday, October 21 at TCNJ’s Soccer Complex.

The victory puts the Lions at 11-1-2 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 5-9-1.

TCNJ got the offense working early as Christine Mullin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) took a nice pass from Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and scored her sixth goal of the year. That goal came only 4:29 into the contest.

That lead increased by a goal with 48 seconds left before the break as junior Courtney Krol (Howell, NJ/Howell) took a penalty kick and tucked the ball into the upper corner for a two-goal cushion.

In the new half, the Lions once again struck early as junior Dana DiBruno (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) knocked in corner kick by Kristen Cubicciotti (North Haledon, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy). That goal, which was DiBruno’s team leading eighth of the season, came 4:55 into the new half.

Kunkel tacked on another goal midway through the second frame with defender Emily Napolitano (Hamilton, NJ/Bordentown) setting up the score.

The scoring continued for the Lions with 19:17 showing on the clock as Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) collected her first of the year and then added another a few minutes later making it 6-0. Beth Pagano (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) then added a pair of goals before Christine Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) scored on a feed from her sister Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) in the waning minutes to complete the decisive win.

TCNJ keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) picked one save to earn the win.

In goal for the Eagles, Laura McCarthy (Glen Rock, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) finished with 10 saves, while Kate Connolly (Gloucester, MA/Austin Prep) made one.

The Lions return to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Monday, October 23 as they head to New Jersey City University to take on the Gothic Knights in a 3 p.m. start.
