Lions beat NJCU and win NJAC regular season

Jersey City, NJ… Eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team locked up first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings along with the top seed in the upcoming tournament as the Lions rolled to their fourth straight scoring a 13-0 victory at New Jersey City University on Monday, October 23.

The victory puts the Lions at 12-1-2 overall on the season, and 7-0-1 in the conference. The loss kept the Gothic Knights winless in conference play at 0-8, while slipping to 3-14 overall.

The game was trimmed from the normal 90 minutes to 70, but TCNJ was still able to boast a season-high 13 goals.

The Lions took charge from the opening kickoff as Christine Mullin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) scored unassisted 1:22 into the game setting the tone. It was Mullin’s third game-winning goal in the last four games.

Just over three minutes later, junior Dana DiBruno (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season followed by goals from Allie Schilling (Somerdale, NJ/Triton) and Nicole Papola (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). Already holding a 4-0 lead, TCNJ added to more goals by the end of the half with Kelly Feeney (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) netting her first collegiate goal and then Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) closed out the scoring in the opening half on an assist from Christine Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex).

The second half saw the Lions continue to dominate as Cunliffe added two more goals to compete the hat trick and Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) scored twice in the second frame. Also adding goals were Kristina Shemming (Cranbury, NJ/West Windsor South), Momoko Aoe (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highlands) and Jenn Olszewski (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial).

All four TCNJ goalies saw time in net combining on the shutout as the Lion defense didn’t allow a shot on goal.

TCNJ caps the regular season on Wednesday, October 25 hosting rival Rowan University at 7:30 p.m.
