TCNJ wraps up regular season on winning note

Ewing, NJ… Eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team capped the regular season with its fifth straight win as the Lions knocked off rival Rowan University by the score of 4-0 on Wednesday, October 25.

The Lions capped conference play with an unbeaten record of 8-0-1 and finish the regular season at 13-1-2. It also marked the third straight year TCNJ has gone unbeaten in conference play going 25-0-1 in that span.

As the top seed in the conference tournament, TCNJ will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Profs will host Kean University in the four-five match-up at 5 p.m. on Saturday with the winner heading to Lions’ Stadium to take on TCNJ in the semifinals.

With the loss, the Profs slipped to 13-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the conference.

The Lions needed only 36 seconds to get on the board as Rowan was whistled for a foul in the penalty area giving TCNJ a penalty kick. Junior Courtney Krol (Howell, NJ/Howell) drilled the free shot into the upper corner of the net giving the hosts a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the contest. Krol is now a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season.

That led doubled 20:51 into the game as Dana DiBruno (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) kicked in a short pass from Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) putting the hosts in front 2-0.

TCNJ padded its lead 1:53 before the intermission as Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Woodstown) headed in a long throw-in by Krol.

In the second half, TCNJ’s lone senior, Christine Mullin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) scored in her final home game as she netted her eighth of the season on an assist from DiBruno. That goal came with 21:31 left in the game.

TCNJ keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) picked up her eighth shutout of the season without facing a shot on goal.

In goal for the Profs, Melissa Hall (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had busy night making 12 saves.
