Center Valley, PA...DeSales University senior Kirby Lutz (Easton, PA/Pen
Argyl) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to earn MVP honors and
lead the DeSales University women’s basketball team past The College of New
Jersey, 72-50, in the championship game of the Starter’s Pub Tip-off
Tournament at DeSales University.
DSU (2-0 overall) used a 14-0 run to end the first half opening up
a 32-20 locker room lead and never looked back in the second
half. Trailing 20-18 with six minutes to play in the opening half, junior
Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) keyed the run with five
points and the Bulldogs canned 7-of-10 free throws to end the half. The
DeSales defense stifled the Lions on the offensive end forcing TCNJ into
seven turnovers and 0-for-5 shooting over the final six minutes of the half.
TCNJ got within 10 to open the second half but DeSales countered
with a 12-2 run to lead, 44-24, and the Lions never got closer than 15
points the rest of the way. During the early second half run, sophomore
LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) canned two treys, while
Kuperavage, sophomore Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuykill) and Lutz
each had two points.
DeSales forced 28 Lion turnovers and held a 42-36 edge on the
boards. Lutz did most of her damage at the foul line converting 8-of-12
freebies. Burke finished the afternoon with 19 points including four
three-pointers, Kuperavage tallied 10 points and Rarick finished with a
game-high six points, five rebounds and eight assists. Burke and
Kuperavage each earned All-Tournament Team honors in addition to Lutz.
For TCNJ, sophomore Lisa Koch (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Township)
and freshman Alexandra Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels)
were the only two Lions in double digits with 11 and 10 respectively. Senior Breanne
Depken (Oradell, NJ/River Dell) earned All-Tournament team honors after totaling six points, four
rebounds and three assists in the championship game loss.
In the consolation game, Ursinus broke open a tie midway thru the
second half with a 16-4 run to end the half and cruised in the second half
en route to a 74-47 win.
