Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team hosted undefeated Dickinson College on Monday night in Packer Hall. TCNJ tallied the 38-37 win to improve to 3-1, while Dickinson suffers their first loss of the year and is now 3-1.
TCNJ has now posted back to back victories over previously unbeaten teams as they knocked off Catholic and now Dickinson.
TCNJ jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Red Devils first scored at 13:08. Despite the early lead, Dickinson pulled within one point, 14-13 at 7:35 before the Lions took a 23-18 halftime lead into the locker room.
Junior forward Sara Best (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees), senior forward Breanne Depken (Oradell, NJ/River Dell Regional), and sophomore center Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) paced TCNJ with four points a piece in the first session of action.
Dickinson senior center Allyson Teatom (Darien, CT/Darien) added seven points in the first half for the Red Devils as they were limited to 28.0% shooting for the first half (8-25).
With 12:25 left to play, Dickinson tied the action for the first time in the game when Teatom drove the lane and picked up the lay-up as the two teams were knotted at 29-29.
Best broke the tie at 9:50 with a lay-up of her own giving the Lions a 31-29 lead. DC’s freshman guard Brooke Muller (Northampton, PA/Whitehall) three-point basket gave the team first lead on a trey at 8:40, 32-31.
Senior forward Megan Hueter (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) hit a two point jumper at 55.0 to give TCNJ a 38-37 lead in what would turn out to the be the game-winning shot. Best collected a key steal as Dickinson went down the floor and gave the Lions the ball, but the Lions were unable to get a shot off and the Red Devils got the ball with 8.4 seconds left to play and trailed by one, 38-37. Muller’s last second shot bounced off the rim as time expired and the Lions
Klimowicz finished with a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds and was the only Lion in double digits on the night. Teatom netted 13 points for Dickinson. Junior guard Laura Houseal (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) added a team-high 10 rebounds with eight points, while junior forward Piper Etess (East Lyme, CT/Lyme-Old Lyme) added nine points and seven rebounds for the Red Devils.
For the game, Dickinson shot 10-13 from the line, while TCNJ stumbled hitting just 1-of-9 from the line. TCNJ held a 46-35 edge on the boards in the contest that saw both teams score a season-low for points.
