Cary, NC… The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team picked up its second win of the young season as the Lions dealt Capital University a 2-0 defeat on Sunday, September 10 on the second day of the Esprit Division III Tournament held in North Carolina.
The Lions (2-0-1), who are second in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III poll, scored both of their goals early in the second half giving leaving head coach Joe Russo just one victory shy of 300 for his career. The veteran coach currently has an impressive career mark of 299-29-20 in 17 seasons.
After a scoreless first half, the Lions struck twice in the early going with junior Dana DiBruno (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) scoring the first of those goals 1:58 in. That goal was set up by an assist from Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Woodstown). Sophomore Jillian Casey (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) made it a two-goal game less than four minutes later as she cashed in on an assist from Kristen Cubicciotti (North Haledon, NJ/Immacuate Heart Academy).
TCNJ goalie Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne) finished with one save for her second straight shutout in the tournament. The freshman also extended her scoreless streak to 252:42.
In goal for the Crusaders, senior Courtney Allan (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Northview) finished with four saves.
The Lions open New Jersey Athletic Conference play this weekend heading to Ramapo College to take on the Roadrunners in a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, September 16.
