TCNJ women's tennis extends win streak to 114 matches

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey’s women’s tennis team hosted the Roadrunners of Ramapo College on Wednesday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match. TCNJ recorded a 9-0 win over Ramapo to improve to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC. The win extends the Lions’ NJAC win streak to 114 matches as the Lions have never lost a league match since the sport was introduced in the fall of 1982.  Ramapo entered the match with a 3-0 record in the league, buts drops to 5-3 overall and now 3-1 in the NJAC.

TCNJ’s rookie Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) recorded a pair of wins as she won at both first singles and first doubles. In singles this fall, she is now 14-1 overall and has won 11 consecutive singles matches. The NJAC’s Rookie of the Week for the past three weeks, Shtemberg defeated Ramapo’s junior Lindsay Gerhard (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May), 6-1, 6-2 in the first singles match. Shtemberg teamed with junior Christina Contrafatto (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) to win the first doubles match as well, 8-0 as they beat Gerhard and freshman Alison Tukel (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown). The Lion pair has now won eight straight matches together and stand at 12-2 together this fall.

Sophomore Haley Kutner (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight Englewood) this week’s NJAC Player of the Week, was a winner for the Lions at No. 2 singles. She bested Ramapo’s Tukel, 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 10-3 this fall. The loss for Tukel was the first of the season in league play. Kutner teamed at No. 2 doubles with rookie Stefanie Haar (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) to win as well as they bested senior Jennifer Murphy (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) and sophomore Elizabeth Wyble (Millville, NJ/Millville), 8-0.

TCNJ returns to action on Sunday, October 1 hosting Kean University at and William Paterson University at as the Lions look to maintain their stranglehold on the NJAC and win a 24th straight league championship and finish the 2006 NJAC schedule riding a league win streak of 116 matches. Ramapo is back in action on September 29 hosting DeSales University at
