Hershey, PA… The College of New Jersey’s women’s soccer team rallied with a pair of goals in the second half to defeat Christopher Newport University 2-1 in the Jako Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College on Sunday, September 3 at Hershey Park Stadium.

The Lions, ranked second in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III preseason poll, were originally slated to open the season on Saturday, but inclement weather forced their game against Ursinus College in the first round of the tournament to be cancelled.

Things got off to slow start for the Lions on Sunday as the Lady Captains netted the lone goal in the opening half as Hillary Carney (Newport News, VA/Menchville) scored with less than 10 minutes left.

TCNJ got things going in the second as Jamie Kunkel (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored 9:40 into the new period. The play originated in the Lions’ defensive third of the field as freshman keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne) boomed a punt that was tipped ahead by Christine Mullin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Kunkel then took care of the rest with the team’s opening goal of the season.

The game-winner came with 16 minutes remaining as sophomore Allie Schilling (Somerdale, NJ/Triton) scored on an assist from Kristen Cubicciotti (North Haledon, NJ/Immacualte Heart Academy).

Clarke earned the win her first collegiate game making six saves.

For Christopher Newport, keeper Erin Wojtkun (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) had busy game with 12 stops.

The Lions will head to North Carolina next weekend for a pair of games taking on fourth-ranked University of Puget Sound on Saturday, September 9 before taking on Capital University the following day.
