Newark, NJ… Junior forward Toni Roselli (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary’s HS), who finished with a game-high 15 points, fueled a decisive first-half rally as Rutgers-Newark downed The College of New Jersey, 59-48, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s basketball game in The Golden Dome.
Roselli, who connected on five of six treys for the game, nailed four consecutive 3-point baskets for the Raiders during a 24-8 game-opening run. Junior guard Sabrina Sanchez (Keasbey,NJ/ Woodbridge), who added 13 points, capped the rally with a long-range jumper with 7:26 left in the period.
Rutgers-Newark (12-5, NJAC 5-2) made just eight of 22 shots overall in the opening period, but the team converted six of 13 from beyond the arc. The Lions (8-11, NJAC 3-5) got baskets from five different players to chip their way back into contention at the half, holding the Raiders to just
one field goal the rest of the period to trail 26-19.
Sophomore center Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), who led the Lions with 14 points, trimmed the Raider lead to 26-21 in the opening seconds of the second period, but Rutgers-Newark answered with her bucket with a vengeance.
Sanchez and junior forward Eni Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) had six points apiece during the 15-2 run which staked the Raiders to a 41-23 lead with 14:50 remaining. TCNJ got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
It marked the first win over TCNJ for Rutgers-Newark head coach Kevin Morris who was 0-11 against Dawn Henderson and her Lions entering the fray. TCNJ was the only NJAC team that Morris had not defeated during his six seasons in Newark.
Junior center Stephanie Ross (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), who sank the first 3-point basket of her career to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead, finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Fageyinbo hauled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points, three assists and three steals.
Junior forward Sara Best (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) collected 10 points for the Lions. Senior forward Breanne Depken (Oradell, NJ/River Dell Regional) added a team-high eight rebounds for the Lions but was held to only four points on the night.
