Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey’s men’s and women’s swimming teams competed on Sunday hosting New York University. TCNJ’s men’s team picked up a narrow124-117 win, while the women’s race went to the Violets, 160-83. TCNJ’s men’s team improves to 5-3 overall, while the Lion women are now 1-8. NYU’s men’s team was unbeaten in dual meet action this season and now stands at 8-1, while NYU’s women’s squad improves to 9-1. NYU’s men’s team last lost a dual meet to TCNJ on January 29, 2006, 136-105 and for the second straight year saw
their perfect season spoiled by the Lions.
Men’s Highlights
TCNJ’s sophomore diver Greg Lloyd (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had another impressive meet as he won both one meter competitions on Sunday. He won the first one meter event with his score of 295.60 and the second event with a 280.65. Both times he bested NYU’s freshman diver, Ryan Murray (Highland, MD) who posted scores of 232.05 and 215.5, respectively.
The meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, which despite NYU winning both first and second place in the race went to TCNJ, by only seven points.
TCNJ won the 400 medley relay in 3:33.70 behind the efforts of sophomore Thomas Nawrot (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), freshman Myles O’Connor (Santa Monica, CA), junior Josh Forsman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), and senior captain Kyle King (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick).
Sophomore Mike Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) won the 1000 freestyle in 9:49.59, besting NYU’s sophomore Paul Hogan (Orchard Park, NY/St. Joe’s Collegiate) who took second in 9:53.99. Molloy also won the 500 freestyle in 4:47.35. Hogan added a second place finish in the 500 free (4:51.54) and a fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.82.
King won the 200 freestyle race in 1:45.32, while Heaney took second in 1:47.90 for the Lions. King was also the winner in the 100 freestyle in 47.51. Heaney won the 200 backstroke for the Lions as well in 1:58.85.
NYU’s sophomore Eric Wang (Redmond, WA) captured the 200 individual medley in 1:56.96 and the 200 butterfly in 1:56.74. Taking second in the 200 IM, was TCNJ’s junior captain Liam Gallagher (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) with his time of 1:57.90. Taking second in the 200 fly for the Lions was senior tri-captain George Savulich (Edison, NJ/St. Joseph) in 1:56.83.
TCNJ closes the dual meet season next Saturday, February 3 when they host William Paterson University at 2:00 p.m.
