Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey’s men’s and women’s swimming teams competed on Sunday hosting New York University. TCNJ’s men’s team picked up a narrow124-117 win, while the women’s race went to the Violets, 160-83. TCNJ’s men’s team improves to 5-3 overall, while the Lion women are now 1-8. NYU’s men’s team was unbeaten in dual meet action this season and now stands at 8-1, while NYU’s women’s squad improves to 9-1.
NYU’s men’s team last lost a dual meet to TCNJ on January 29, 2006, 136-105 and for the second straight year saw their perfect season spoiled by the Lions.
TCNJ’s senior diver Lee Swanson (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) diver won both one meter diving events. In the first one meter event she recorded a score of 259.85 to beat NYU’s senior Abigail Penn (Marietta, GA) who had a 234.30. In the second one meter event, it was Swanson taking first once more with her score of 254.0 to Penn’s 252.50 and once again posting NCAA qualifying scorers with her first place finishes.
Junior Ava Kiss (North Brunswick, NJ/Stuart Country Day) won the 200 individual medley in 2;14.36, while sophomore Stacy Delehanty (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) finished in second place in 2:18.50 for the Lions. Delehanty also picked up a third place finish in the 200 backstroke event in 2:19.27.
TCNJ won the final race of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay in 3:43.28 behind the efforts of rookie Stephanie Seto (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), senior Kerry Genese (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame), Kiss, and sophomore Brittany Collyer (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township).
Seto also placed second in the 500 freestyle in 5:29.95 and third in the 1,000 freestyle in 11:14.38, while Collyer took third in the 50 freestyle in 26.04. Genese posted a fourth place finish in the 100 freestyle in 56.84 as well for the Lions.
Junior Stefanie Rashti (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) finished in fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:37.36 and fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:22.75.
Senior Laura Heslin (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) posted a fourth place showing in the 1000 freestyle with her time of 11:34.01, while senior Catherine Benigno (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) placed third in the 100 freestyle in 56.65.
NYU’s freshman Kacey McCaffrey (Mullica Hill, NJ/Archmere Academy) won the 200 freestyle for the Violets in 1:58.67, while also winning the 500 freestyle in 5:17.02.
TCNJ returns to action on Saturday, February 3 when the Lions host William Paterson University at 2:00 p.m.
