Gettysburg, PA…Alvernia College took advantage of its frequent trips to the foul line to slip past The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team by the score of 64-55 in the opening round of the Gettysburg College Days Inn Tournament on Wednesday.
In the consolation game, TCNJ (5-6) will face the tournament host Gettysburg College at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Alvernia (5-3) had a huge edge from the foul line in the game making 28 trips to the stripe and connecting on 24 of those attempts for an 85.7 percentage. In contrast, the Lions only went to the foul line four times during the game making just one of those shots.
The Crusaders also shot well from long range shooting 50 percent from behind the 3-point arc making eight of 16 shots.
Senior forward Breanne Depken (Oradell, NJ/River Dell) led the Lions with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore center Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added 12 points.
Sophomore guard Sara Best (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) added six points and nine rebounds for TCNJ and freshman Alexandra Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) netted six points and grabbed seven boards.
