Wayne, NJ---- A 14-point, third-quarter rally helped No. 24 The College of New Jersey (5-1, 3-0 NJAC) escape William Paterson (2-4, 0-3 NJAC) with a 21-13 victory Oct. 13 at Wightman Stadium.
William Paterson senior Kareen Moon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) became the Pioneers' all-time career receptions leader when he hauled in a 20-yard pass late in the second quarter. The catch was the 138th of Moon's career, eclipsing the previous mark of 137 established by Bryant Richardson (2000-03). Already William Paterson's career receiving yardage leader, he is now 10 yards shy of becoming the first player in program history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark (1,990), and he needs three touchdown receptions to take over the career lead in that category as well.
WP senior Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo) provided all of the offense in the first half, connecting on a pair of second-quarter field goals (31 yards, 7:09; 41 yards, 2:10) to give the Pioneers a 6-0 halftime lead.
The Lions collected themselves at halftime and responded during the very first drive of the third quarter. A 30-yard completion from Christopher James (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) to Dan Dornacker (Jersey City, N.J./Brick Twp.) helped set up a one-yard James touchdown plunge with 11:11 to play in the quarter. Matthew Dalessio's (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) extra point was good, making it a 7-6 TCNJ lead.
TCNJ found the end zone again, this time a one-yard scamper by Chase Misiura (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), for a 14-6 Lion edge with 3:58 on the clock in the third.
The Lions' final points of the day came on a six-yard completion from James to Chris Opdyke (Lambertville, N.J./Hunterdon Central), making the score 21-6 with 4:44 remaining in the contest.
William Paterson's Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) blocked a TCNJ punt, and Isaac Abankwa (Willingboro, N.J./Burlington City) scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 20 yards for the Pioneers' first touchdown of the day, pulling within eight (21-13) with 2:19 on the clock. WPU tried to get the ball back with an onside kick, but The College of New Jersey came down with it, thwarting any last-second comeback attempt by the Pioneers.
Senior Dan Lamego (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) completed 11 of 18 passes for 98 yards, while sophomore John Woodson (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) was 2-for-3 for 30 yards for the Pioneers. Senior Ira Guilford (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken) led WP with 27 yards rushing on 16 carries, and Rivera caught four passes for 47 yards.
Senior Brian Burd (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) led the WP defense with 11 tackles (seven solo), including 2.0 sacks and 4.5 for loss. Junior Mike Lamego (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) had nine stops (six solo), while senior Frank Musolino (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and sophomore Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) each had eight tackles.
James led TCNJ's offense, completing 9 of 17 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. Dornacker carried 19 times for 66 yards, and caught four passes for 64 yards.
Senior Joe King (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) led the Lion defense with eight tackles (four solo, 3.5 for loss). Senior Andrew Larkin (Hamilton Square, N.J./Notre Dame) added two interceptions to his six total stops (four solo).
The Pioneers will travel to western New York to take on Buffalo State Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1:00 p.m. TCNJ will host Western Connecticut Oct. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
