#3 Salisbury slips past #2 Lions, 3-1

Ewing, NJ… Salisbury University scored three straight goals in the second half to slip past The College of New Jersey field hockey team, 3-1, on Saturday in a showdown of highly-ranked teams.

The Lions entered the game ranked second in the NFHCA Division III poll with the Sea Gulls right behind them in the third spot. With the win, Salisbury has won 12 straight games improving to 13-1 on the season, while TCNJ is now 9-2 and saw its modest six-game winning streak end.

After a scoreless first half, the teams traded goals less than a minute apart with the Lions getting on the scoreboard first. Junior Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) redirected a pass from senior Sheri Grondski (Mercerville, NJ/Nottingham) on a penalty corner with 20:56 left in the second half. Salisbury got the goal back just 38 seconds later as Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) tipped in a pass from Kristina Holland (Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke) knotting the score at one apiece.

The Sea Gulls forged their way into the lead for the first time just over three minutes later as Abby Tedford (Chester, MD/Kent Island) scored off a scramble in front.

Salisbury added an insurance goal with 6:58 remaining in the game as Kandice Hancock (Westover, MD/Washington) tallied on an assist from Holland.

TCNJ goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) finished with four saves.

In goal for the Sea Gulls, senior Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ/Highland) collected seven saves.

Next up for the Lions is another ranked opponent as they host seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday, October 16 at Lions' Stadium, while the Sea Gulls are also in action playing Villa Julie College.
