Lions win eight bouts in victory over Hunter

Heavyweight Steve Carbone won by decision for the Lions.

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey wrestling team won eight of 10 weight classes as they Lions beat visiting Hunter College by the score of 30-9 on Wednesday at Packer Hall.

The Lions (2-0) are ranked eighth in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, while the Hawks (0-1) entered the match in the 30th spot. TCNJ has also now won 15 straight dual meets dating back to last season.

TCNJ opened the dual meet with a victory as freshman Kyle Kinchen (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) posted a 10-5 decision at 125 pounds. The Hawks then tied the score at 3-3 as Adam Coleman (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) won in the final seconds at 133 by the score of 8-7.

The Lions pulled back in front at 141 pounds as freshman John Barnett (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Township) recorded an 8-4 victory and sophomore Tyler Branham (Newton, NJ/Kittantinny) followed with a 10-1 major decision at 149. Branham entered the match ranked fourth nationally at 149.in his weight class.

Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) made it consecutive wins by major decision for the Lions as at 157 pounds as the sophomore won by the score of 18-6. That win was followed by third major decision as Al Wonesh (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) put TCNJ in front 18-3 with a 12-3 victory at 165 pounds.

The Lions added to the lead as junior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) won by forfeit at 174, but Hunter's Joey Scott (Walden, NY/Valley Central) snapped TCNJ's streak of four straight wins with a pin at 184 pounds in 55 seconds. Scott entered the match ranked seventh.

The hosts closed out the dual meet with two more victories as Shawn Vanwingerden (Wantage, NJ/High Point) won 11-5 at 197 and heavyweight Steve Carbone (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) ended the dual meet with a 6-0 triumph.

TCNJ will compete again on Sunday, November 18 taking part in the annual Ursinus College Fall Brawl.
