Stevens SID Office

Hoboken, NJ...Senior and sixth-ranked Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) notched a 7-5 sudden victory in the 174-lb. contest against The College of New Jersey junior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick,
N.J.) on Wednesday night at Walker Gymnasium, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team dropped its home opener to No. 8 The College of New Jersey by a final score of 24-16. TCNJ moves to a dual-meet record of 4-0 with the win.

At 125 lbs, sophomore Kyle Brisson (Syracuse, N.Y.) fell to Lions' freshman Dan Hughes (Delran, N.J.), 6-2. Brisson opened up the scoring with a takedown, which was immediately followed by a reversal from Hughes to knot the game at 2-2 after one period. In the second period, Hughes used an escape and another takedown to take a 5-2 lead. There was a point handed to Hughes at the end of the third for riding time.

In the 141-lb. match, junior Pat Conrad (Enola, Pa.) used two takedowns in the first period to major sophomore Brian Suozzo (Old Bridge, N.J.) of TCNJ, 15-4. After an escape cut the Ducks' lead to 4-2 after two periods, Conrad tallied three takedowns and three near fall points in the final quarter to
give himself the victory.

At 149 lbs, sophomore Leo Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) got the team three points after defeating Lions' freshman John Barnett (Oak Ridge, N.J.) by a 4-2 count. Leading 2-1 after one period, Conrad and Barnett both ran away from each other's clutches in the second and third quarters, respectively,
to grab a point each (3-2). Once the match was finished, Conrad was awarded the extra marker for riding time.

In the 157-lb. weight class, TCNJ sophomore Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, N.J.) got an escape in the final period to record a 4-3 decision over sophomore Charles Favia (Brick, N.J.) of Stevens. Locked up at 3-3 going into the third quarter, DiColo chose the option of starting down. Soon after, he escaped from Favia and received the deciding fourth point.

At 165 lbs, junior Jordan Chacon (Hackensack, N.J.) failed to score a point as Lions' junior Al Wonesh (Columbus, N.J.) picked up a major decision (12-0). Wonesh accumulated two takedown, two reversal and six near fall points in the match.

The 174-lb. contest featured a re-match from the Spartan Invitational on December 1 with MacWhinnie and Osgoodby. On Sunday, Osgoodby majored MacWhinnie, 12-1. Tonight, the three-time national qualifier found himself down by a score of 4-1 after two periods. In the final stanza, MacWhinnie began up top and Osgoodby escaped to take a 5-1 advantage. MacWhinnie quickly rebounded and recorded a takedown to cut the deficit to two. Then, in the final 30 seconds, MacWhinnie got a penalty point for stalling and then obtained the riding time marker to send the contest into extra time. In the first overtime period, MacWhinnie immediately took down Osgoodby to win it.

In the 184-lb. weight class, TCNJ picked up its third major decision of the night as freshman Joe Bozzomo (Middlesex, N.J.) downed freshman James Ray (Ewing, N.J.), 11-2. Bozzomo used a five-point spurt in the opening quarter to take hold of the match. Later on, in the third period, Bozzomo notched
another six points via two takedowns, one escape and the riding time point.

Lastly, at 197 lbs, freshman Justin Galati (Tabernacle, N.J.) faced off against Lions' senior Shawn Vanwingerden (Wantage, N.J.). Leading 4-2 after the opening stanza, Vanwingerden began the second quarter on the mat. However, he retreated for an escape point and then got a takedown to take a 7-2 lead. After that, Vanwingerden put the contest away for good with two near fall points and one penalty marker to grab hold of a commanding 10-2 advantage.
