Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey’s men’s basketball team finished the 2006-2007 season on a winning note as the Lions bested Rutgers University-Camden 70-56 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up on Thursday night in Packer Hall. The victory marked the 200th career win for TCNJ’s John Castaldo who is in his 14th season as the men’s basketball coach at his alma mater. Castaldo is now 200-148.
With the win, TCNJ finishes the regular-season at 12-13 overall and 5-8 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden is now 5-19 overall and 1-11 in the conference.
TCNJ led 29-18 at the break as they held the Scarlet Raptors to only 24.1% shooting from the floor (7-29), while forcing 10 first half turnovers. RUC held a 22-17 edge on the boards in the first session of play as TCNJ was limited to a 14.3% effort from three-point range (1-7).
TCNJ’s senior guard Brian Halligan (Delran, NJ/Delran) added a game-high 19 points and six rebounds, just one point shy of tying his career-best, while junior guard Corey Gilmore (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) netted 13 points for the Lions. Junior forward Mark Aziz (Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris) contributed 10 points as well for the Lions as they finished with a 52.5% effort from the floor (31-59).
Junior guard Drew Rosenfeld (Haddonfield, NJ/Camden Catholic) netted a career-high nine assists with seven points as he stared just his second game of the year.
Rutgers-Camden got a double-double from senior forward Sydney Francis (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) as he netted 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore center Antoine Miller (Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) added 11 points for the Scarlet Raptors as they finished the night with a 37-30 edge on the boards. Senior guard Dane Nicholson (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) added eight rebounds and six points for the night as the Scarlet Raptors dropped their seventh straight contest.
Rutgers-Camden hosts Kean University on Saturday in the regular-season finale, while TCNJK must sit and wait for the NJAC playoffs and hope that the right combination of wins and losses by opponents finds the Lions in the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the South Division.
