Fast start propels Lions to 18-5 victory

COLLEGEVILLE, PA...Junior Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) registered a game-high five goals and Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) tallied a hat trick while adding an assist to lead No. 2 The College of New Jersey past Ursinus 18-5 in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.

Doane scored the first four out of six goals, helping the Lions (2-0) race out to a 10-2 halftime lead that would not relinquish for their second win of the season while handing the Bears (3-1) their first loss.

Freshman Elizabeth Cannon (Garrison, NY/James I. O’Neil) scored two goals, and Stephanie Kaysen (Media, PA/Penncrest) posted one goal and an assist to pace the Bears.

The two-time defending national champions scored the first eight goals of the game, before Ursinus got on the board late in the first half.

Doane put away the first goal of the game three minutes, 16 seconds into the game, before Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally at the 20:32 mark.

Doane scored back-to-back goals and Kelly Mitchell (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) netted her first of two goals for a 5-0 lead.

Wasn’t long before Doane and Reuther struck again and Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) recorded her first goal of the season to jump out to a 8-0 advantage with 5:27 left in the half.

Cannon stopped the run with her first collegiate goal on a free position shot, but Falcone answered with her second 8-meter goal to make it 9-1.

After a successful clear with 41 seconds until intermission, Lisa Clark (Media, PA/Penncrest) found Leah Kramer (Bishopville, MD/Stephen Decatur) for the Bears’ second goal.

Gordon managed to get the last marker of the half with a solo run with eight seconds showing on the clock, starting a 6-0 run that would begin the second stanza.

The Lions finished five out of seven free-position shots, including three in the second half.

Cannon tallied her second goal, while Catie Cameron (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) and Kaysen collected the final two goals of the game.

Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) made eight saves for TCNJ and Allyson Shicora (Media, PA/Strath Haven) posted nine stops for Ursinus.
