Lions use second half rally to beat No. 8 Cortland, 8-6

The College of New Jersey’s women’s lacrosse team recorded an 8-6 win over the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon in Lions’ Stadium. Ranked No. 2 in Division III, the Lions are now 3-0, while Cortland drops to 2-2.

Cortland led 5-3 at the half, and took a 6-3 lead early in the second half, before the Lions would come back and would finish the game scoring five unanswered goals en route to the 8-6 win.

Junior Kate Neese (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) netted two goals in the second half, including the go ahead goal as she paced TCNJ with three points on two goals and an assist. Junior midfielders Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) and Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added two goals and an assist as well for the Lions.

Cortland’s senior midfielder Ali Bourgal (Sachem, NY/Sachem) paced the Red Dragons as she connected with three goals and now has 17 goals and a team-best 21 points.

In net for the Lions, junior Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) came up with a strong second half performance and finished with three saves in the contest and is now 3-0 in net. Cortland’s senior Michelle Zimmer (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) made 10 saves on 18 shots with eight goals allowed and is now 1-1.
