Anzelone and Cosgrove help Lions tally 14-7 win over GMC

Ranked No. 13 in Division III, the Lions of The College of New Jersey posted a 14-7 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday in George Ackerman Park to improve to 10-4 on the year. The Griffins drop to 8-3.

The Lions picked up 14 runs off 14 hits in the outing and have now scored 10 or more runs in eight of their 14 games.

Among the many highlights for the Lions on offense was a two run home run by senior second baseman Andrew Cosgrove (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) in the third inning, while senior left fielder PJ Anzelone (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) added a three RBI homerun in the sixth inning. For the game, Cosgrove was 2-3 with four runs scored, with three RBI’s. Anzelone led the team with his five RBI’s and connected on a triple as well after a 3-5 effort.

Senior Jeff Botti (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) was 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs for the day as TCNJ bats connected on six extra-base hits.

GMC’s junior Mark Mattes (Doylestown, PA/CB East) drove in three runs for the Griffins and was 3-4 with two runs scored after adding a double and a triple on the game, as well as a sacrifice fly.

On the mound for the Lions junior Bob Buskett (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) picked up his first win of the season (1-0) after 5.1 innings of work with three earned runs off five hits. He had a no hitter until the top of the fourth inning and gave up a lead off double to Mattes to end his bid for the no hitter.

Junior Matt Barrett (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) worked 2.2 innings for the Lions in middle relief with three earned runs off four hits and fanned four on the day. Sophomore Eric Gertie (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) closed the game for the Lions giving up one unearned run off one hit in an inning of work.

GMC’s sophomore Ryan McNamara (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) made his first appearance on the mound in 2007 and took the loss after four innings of work (0-1) with eight earned runs off nine hits with five walks and a strikeout.

TCNJ returns to action on Thursday for the team’s 2007 NJAC opener at William Paterson University in a 3:00 p.m. start in Wayne, NJ. TCNJ, the two-time defending NJAC Champions, are the NJAC Coaches’ Pre-Season favorites to repeat as the league champs. GMC returns to action on Friday, March 30 hosting Alvernia College in a 3:00 p.m. PAC tilt.
