Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women’s lacrosse team improved to 4-0 on the season Thursday as the second-ranked Lions defeated visiting Cabrini College by the score of 11-3.
Dating back to last season, the Lions have now won 17 straight games and will put that streak on the line this weekend when they face a tough road test at ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington.
The loss brings an end to Cabrini’s five-game winning streak dropping the Cavaliers to 5-2 on the season.
TCNJ got off to another good start as the Lions raced out to a 6-0 lead before Cabrini got on the board. Kate Neese (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) opened the scoring for the Lions on a feed from Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) before Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) made it a 2-0 game on a free position shot.
The Lions pushed that lead to 6-0 as Kristin Zucconi (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) and Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each scored twice in that span.
The Cavaliers then outscored the hosts 2-1 the rest of the half with Emilie Greto (Brookhaven, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) and Katelyn Penrose (Springfield (Delco), PA/Springfield) each scoring.
In the second half, TCNJ dominated territorial play outscoring Cabrini 4-1 with Doane getting two of those goals. Doane is closing in on the 100-goal plateau for her career as she has 98 in her career.
Doane and Zucconi each finished with three goals and two assists, while Falcone added three goals.
At the other end of the field, goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) was steady making six saves.
In goal for the Cavaliers, Kate Schmid (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) finished with four stops.
