Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women’s lacrosse team began its title defense on a winning note as the Lions kicked off the new season with a 13-6 victory over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Friday at Lions’ Stadium.
Top-ranked TCNJ got a huge game from Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) as the junior finished with seven goals. The midfielder took charge in the second half as the Lion came out of the break leading 6-2. Doane netted a pair of goals in the 47 seconds of the new half and scored TCNJ’s first four goals of the half.
Junior Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) also had a solid game for the Lions scoring three goals, while junior attack Kate Neese (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) contributed with a pair of assists.
At the other end of the field, goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) was tremendous in her first start for the Lions as the junior finished with 11 saves in 50 minutes, while allowing four goals in earning her first victory. Freshman Lindsay Wallin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) also saw time in net for the Lions and made one save.
For the Devils, Amanda Wayne (Bell Port, NY/Bell Port) and Lindsey Specht (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) each scored a pair of goals.
In goal for FDU-Florham, Brittany Laning (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) finished with seven saves.
The Lions return to action on March 18 hosting Saint Mary’s College at 1 p.m., while FDU-Florham heads to Florida to take on Ohio Wesleyan on March 14.
