Ewing, NJ…The Lions of No. 28 ranked The College of New Jersey’s women’s tennis team recorded a 9-0 win over New York University on Friday afternoon. TCNJ has now won captured four wins in a row and stands at 12-1 on the season, while NYU drops to 9-5 overall and watches their three-match win streak come to an end.

Overall on the 2006-2007 season, TCNJ has beaten eight of their 13 opponents by a score of 9-0.

TCNJ’s freshman Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over NYU’s sophomore Stephanie Tu (Greenvale, NY/Roslyn). Shtemberg is ranked No. 9 regionally in singles action and is now 24-3 overall this year and 12-0 in dual meet action.

At No. 2 singles, TCNJ’s junior Christina Contrafatto (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) bested NYU’s senior Erika Olson (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad), 6-2, 6-1. With the victory in singles, Contraffato is now 45-14 on her singles career with a 10-1 record this season, while Olson drops to 11-9 this year.

Shtemberg and Contrafatto teamed at No. 1 doubles for the win as well as they beat Olson and senior Katie Lee (Huntington, NY/Huntington), 8-1. TCNJ’s top pair is now 22-4 together this season with an 11-1 dual meet record, while Olson and Lee drop to 10-8 together.

TCNJ’s lone senior, Kristen Turturtiello (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston) won the marathon match at No. 4 singles as he beat junior Holly Smith (Troy, MI/Troy Athens), 6-1, 3-6, 15-13 in the super breaker.

Turturtiello is now 14-3 on the campaign, while elevating her career singles record to 63-19. She teamed at No. 2 doubles with freshman Tamra Wroblesky (Freehold, NJ/Communications) to beat Smith and junior Meggie Smith (Knoxville, TN/West), 8-6.

TCNJ returns to action on April 18 hosting Bates College in a 1:00 p.m. match-up, while NYU is back on the courts on April 15 hosting Moravian College at Noon.
