Haran goes deep twice as Lions down RSC, 4-2

Pomona, NJ…Ranked 11th in Division III, The College of New Jersey’s baseball team tallied a 4-2 win over Richard Stockton College on Thursday to improve to 19-8 overall and 7-4 in the NJAC, while RSC drops to 18-9-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the league.

TCNJ’s senior catcher Gerard Haran (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) added two homeruns to lead the Lions and finished the day with two RBI’s. Haran leads the Lions this season with eight homeruns and 27 RBI’s. TCNJ’s career homerun leader, he now has 43 career homeruns with 189 RBI’s, also a TCNJ career mark.

Senior Blake Bullis (Delran, NJ/Delran) added a solo homer for the Lions in the victory as well.

TCNJ’s junior pitcher Brad Kittle (Millville, NJ/Millville) was the Lions’ starter and winning pitcher after allowing only one run on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings. Senior reliever Dave Waseleski (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) yielded one run on one hit in the final two frames for a save.

For RSC, Matt Allen (Salem, NJ/Woodstown) went 2-2 with a double and an RBI while Joe Sacerdote (Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was 1-4 with a solo home run. Sean Donovan (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. After surrendering four early runs, Donovan settled down and allowed just one hit over the final five innings, but Stockton was unable to rally.

Bullis and Haran led off the second inning with back-to-back solo homers for a 2-0 TCNJ lead. Allen pulled Stockton within 2-1 with an RBI double in the third frame. Haran led off the fourth inning with his second solo home run and Matt Zonies (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added an RBI single to extend TCNJ’s lead to 4-1. Sacerdote led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer for Stockton but Waseleski retired the next three batters for the 4-2 victory by the Lions.

Stockton will host Rowan tomorrow in an NJAC game at 3:30 pm. The College of New Jersey will travel to Rutgers-Camden for a league game tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
