Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey women’s lacrosse team used a quick-strike offense to remain perfect at home this season as the Lions handled visiting Colorado College by the score of 16-6 on Friday.
The win put the fifth-ranked Lions at 9-2 on the season and 5-0 at Lions’ Stadium. The loss knocked Colorado College to 6-5.
TCNJ opened rattled off the first five goals of the game with the final with the final two coming just eight seconds apart. Diane Haddeland (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) netted the first of those quick goals with Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) getting the second after collecting the draw control and racing toward the cage.
Later in the half, the Lions netted goals 14 seconds apart with Doane this time getting the first on a free position attempt. Bernadette Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) got the latter of the two markers putting the hosts in front 8-2.
The Lions carried a 9-3 lead into the half.
In the second frame, TCNJ netted the first six goals of the new period with Doane and Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) each scoring twice in that span.
The Tigers broke that run when Robin Harvey (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored on a free position shot making it a 15-4 game.
Doane paced the Lions with five goals and Cavallo and Angela Wilmer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) each scored three times with Cavallo also adding a pair of assists. With those three goals, Cavallo notched her third straight 20-goal season for the Lions and also set a career high in assists as she now has 12 on the season.
A trio of players netted a pair of goals for the Tigers with Harvey, Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) and Rachel Walker (Littleton, CO/Littleton) each scoring twice.
In goal for the Lions, junior Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) finished with six saves, while Jess Van Doren (Boise, ID/Boise) made seven for Colorado College.
TCNJ was slated to play again on Saturday, April 21 against Frostburg State University, but that game has been postponed and has been rescheduled for May 4. The Lions will next play on Tuesday, April 24 hosting Montclair State University in the first meeting between the two schools since the Red Hawks revitalized women’s lacrosse in 1997. The last meeting came back in 1985 with TCNJ, then known as Trenton State College, collecting a 15-3 victory.
The Tigers return to Lions’ Stadium on Sunday to take on Frostburg State.
