Jersey City, NJ… The College New Jersey’s softball team pulled off a doubleheader swept at New Jersey City University on Saturday as the Lions improved its modest conference winning streak to three games.
The Lions won the opening game of the New Jersey Athletic Conference twin bill by the score of 9-1 in six innings and then completed the sweep taking the second game, 6-0. TCNJ is now 14-12 overall and 4-8 in the NJAC.
Game 1: TCNJ 9, NJCU 1 (6 innings)
The Lions came back from a 1-0 deficit with a big third inning scoring six times. TCNJ then added two more runs in the fourth and another in the sixth for the win.
Tara Harrigan (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had a huge game at the plate going 3-for-4 with all three of her hits being doubles. She also knocked in three runs and scored three times. Freshman Rachel Greeby (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) added to TCNJ’s offense with three hits in three at bats.
Senior pitcher Julianne Lajiness (Monroe Twp., NJ/Notre Dame) benefited from the run support as she collected her team-leading eighth win. Lajiness allowed only one unearned run finishing with a three hitter with eight strikeouts.
Game 2: TCNJ 6, NJCU 0
Senior pitcher Heather Hoffman (Annandale, NJ/Immaculata) hurled her second straight shutout holding the Gothic Knights to a pair of hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
The Lions took the lead in their first at bat as Jen Hughes (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) singled home Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) for a 1-0 advantage. TCNJ added another run in the inning as Jess Kohut (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) when Kristin Boyer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. The inning continued for the Lions as Hughes scored on a wild pitch and then Lauren Musacchia (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) made it 5-0 with a two-run single.
The Lions added another run later in the game to cap the scoring in the sweep.
The Lions return to NJAC play on Sunday, April 22 hosting Rowan University in a doubleheader. The first game gets underway at 1 p.m. at Lions’ Park.
