Gettysburg, PA… In a rematch of the 2006 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship, fifth-ranked Gettysburg College edged top-ranked The College of New Jersey as the Bullets netted a 9-8 overtime victory against the Lions on Friday in Gettysburg.
Last season, the Bullets (9-1) won by an identical 9-8 score in Ewing, before the Lions (6-1) went on to avenge the loss in the title game by the score of 10-4. That loss to the Bullets came on March 30, 2006 and was the last time the Lions have suffered a loss reeling off 19 straight before falling on Friday.
The Lions (6-1) won their second straight national crown last spring by beating Gettysburg, but the Bullets (9-1) were also responsible for one of the team’s regular season losses, which was by an identical 9-8 score.
Gettysburg controlled the first half holding a 7-3 advantage, but the Lions stormed back in the second frame and take an 8-7 lead scoring five straight goals.
The Bullets tied the game off of scramble in front with 3:30 left on the clock and then got the winning goal with 34 seconds remaining in the first overtime as Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of Holy Cross) tallied. The teams played two mandatory three-minute overtimes.
Kate Neese (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) each scored twice and picked up one assist, while Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), Angela Wilmer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each scored once.
At the other end of the field, goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) finished with 11 saves.
TCNJ returns to the field on Tuesday, April 10 at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
