Millersville, PA… The College of New Jersey field hockey team netted a pair of goals in the second half to open the new season with a win as the Lions got past Millersville University 3-2 on Saturday.
The Lions, ranked fifth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association pre-season poll, tallied the winning goal just after the Marauders knotted the game at two goals apiece. Melissa Barto (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) netted her second goal of the game 12:10 into the second half for Millersville, but the Lions came back with the equalizer 2:24 later. Junior Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored that deciding goal off an assist from sophomore Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) on a play that started on a penalty corner.
Both teams scored in the first half with TCNJ striking first as Gabby Cafone (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) recorded her first as a Lion 9:16 into the game. Earning an assist on the play was Kelly Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
Millersville got the goal back four minutes later as Barto notched her first of the game.
The Lions got off to a fast start in the second half as Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Henry Hudson) scored just 1:16 into the new half on a feed from Falcone.
The Marauders got that goal back later in the period setting up Lubin's heroics.
Goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) made four saves in her debut in net for TCNJ
TCNJ is right back in action on Sunday, September 2 hosting Ithaca College in a 1 p.m. start at Lions' Stadium.
