Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team got goals from five different players as the Lions roared past visiting Ithaca College by the score of 5-0 in their home opener on Sunday.
The win caps a busy opening weekend for fifth-ranked TCNJ as they won both games to put its record at 2-0, while the Bombers are 0-1.
Freshman Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal midway through the opening half on a scramble in front of the Ithaca net. TCNJ made in 2-0 with just nine seconds left in the period as Ashleigh Pecherski (Middletown, NJ/Middletown) scored off of a feed from Jackie Gelinas (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) on a penalty corner.
The Lions tacked on three more goals in the second half with freshman Kellyn Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) scoring the first goal of her career on an assist from Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). That goal came just 2:29 into the new half.
Junior Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Henry Hudson) made it 4-0 with her second goal in as many games with Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) picking up the assist.
TCNJ's finally tally came with 13:57 remaining as Reuther knocked in her first of the season.
In goal for the Lions, Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) won her second straight start making a pair of saves, while Ithaca's Chelsea Welsh (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) finished with seven saves, while Courtney Dowell (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) collected nine.
TCNJ will be back on the field on Thursday, September 6 taking on Eastern University in a 7:30 p.m. start.
