Ewing, NJ… Junior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored the game's only goal as third-ranked The College of New Jersey field hockey team upended second-ranked Messiah College, 1-0, at Lions' Stadium on Thursday.
Reuther cashed in on a penalty stroke just 1:07 into the game as she tucked a shot into the far upper corner of the net past the reach of Messiah goalie Ashley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, PA/Northern). The goal was Reuther's team-leading fifth of the season and fourth in the last two games.
The win put the Lions at 4-1 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 3-2.
After TCNJ grabbed the early lead, the Falcons were only able to get one shot on goal in each half. In the first half junior Jackie Gelinas (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) recorded a defensive and before goalie Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) secured the victory in the second with her only save of the game. Messiah's Sarah Bich (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) took a good shot from the near wing, but Gregory slide over and made a nice pad save.
For Messiah, Mowery made eight saves and Brittany Godshall (Souderton, PA/Souderton) recorded a pair of defensive saves.
The Lions will play another non-conference game on Saturday, September 22 at FDU-Florham in a 1 p.m. start, while the Falcons are at King's College.
