Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team ran its winning streak to a modest four straight as the Lions got past visiting Manhattanville College 7-0 on Saturday at Lions' Stadium.
The third-ranked Lions set the tone early scoring three goals in a span of 5:17 during the first 15 minutes of the game.
TCNJ improved to 7-1 while keeping its winning streak alive and the loss was the first for the Valiants in the last six games as they fell to 7-3.
Lion sophomore Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) opened the scoring 9:53 into the game with freshman Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) earning the assist.
Two minutes later the host got back on the board as Mitchell picked up her fourth goal of the season with an assist from Jackie Gelinas (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). The final goal of the burst a little more than three minutes later when Sheri Grondski (Mercerville, NJ/Nottingham) drilled home a short pass from junior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North).
In the second half, Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Henry Hudson) scored goals 1:05 apart bumping TCNJ's advantage to 6-0. The final goal came on a penalty corner as senior Colleen Dougherty (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) laced a shot off of pass from Gelinas on a penalty corner.
In goal for the Lions, junior Caitlin Gregory (Winslow, NJ/Eastern) and senior Gina Quaranta (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) combined on the shutout with facing a shot.
For the Valiants, Lauren Gagnon (Staffordville, CT/Stafford) had a busy game in goal making 13 saves.
TCNJ held a 39-1 advantage in shots and 18-3 in penalty corners.
The Lions return to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, October 2 hosting rival and 12th-ranked Rowan University in a 7:30 p.m. start at Lions' Stadium, while Manhattanville is at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
