Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team scored on three of its first five shots as the Lions remained unbeaten shutting out visiting Rutgers University-Newark 8-0 on Saturday.
The win put the third-ranked Lions at 9-0-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The loss knocked the Scarlet Raiders to 3-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.
TCNJ opened the scoring on its second shot as junior Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) knocked in a rebound off of a shot from senior Dana DiBruno (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill East) just 2:15 into the contest. The goal was Kunkel's team leading ninth of the season and marked the fourth straight game she has scored.
Kunkel was also involved in the second goal sending a nice centering passing to sophomore Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy), who cashed in on the scoring chance. That goal came at 10:53 making it 2-0.
The third goal in TCNJ's fast start came off of the foot of Kristen Cubicciotti (North Haledon, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) after she took a lead pass from Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Woodstown).
The Lions padded the lead with one more goal before the intermission as freshman Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) accepted a pass from Casey Riley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Holy Cross) for a 40- lead at the break.
In the second half, TCNJ matched its output from the opening frame as Kunkel and McDonough each tallied their second of the game and DiBruno and Toni-Anne Cavallo (Cedar Grove, NJ/West Essex) both tallied their first.
Sophomore Momoko Aoe (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highland) chipped in with a pair of assists.
Sophomore keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) played into the half added to her growing streak of not allowing a goal to 770:48 making one save. In the second half, Kristina Kuda (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) and Amy Hashem (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) also saw time in net, but did not face a shot.
In goal for Rutgers-Newark, Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) collected 13 saves, including stopping a pair of TCNJ breakaways.
The Lions play a non-conference game on Monday, October 1 at Johns Hopkins University, while the Scarlet Raiders head to St. Joseph's College on Wednesday.
