Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team was the lone program to pull out a victory on the first day of TCNJ's adidas Classic as the Lions posted a 7-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson College, while in the other game on Saturday Amherst College and Johns Hopkins University battled to a 1-1 draw.

The win put second-ranked TCNJ at 3-0 on the season, while the Presidents evened out at 1-1-1. The second game in the tournament was the season opener for seventh-ranked Amherst, while 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins slipped to 2-1-1.

Action resumes tomorrow morning with the Lions taking on Amherst in a rematch from the 2006 NCAA Division III quarterfinals starting at 11 a.m., while Washington & Jefferson takes on Johns Hopkins in the final game of the tournament at 1:30 p.m.

#2 TCNJ 7, Washington & Jefferson 0
The Lions got off to a fast start in the opening game of the tournament thanks to sophomore Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) as she scored the first two goals of the game and then set up the third. Her first tally came on an assist from senior Courtney Krol (Howell, NJ/Howell) 12:30 into the game.

Just over two minutes later, McDonough doubled the Lion lead with an unassisted goal and set up the team's third score feeding Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). All three goals came within a span of 5:48.

Junior Allie Schilling (Somerdale, NJ/Triton) capped the opening half for TCNJ with consecutive goals with the latter coming on an assist from Laura Delaney (River Vale, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy).

McDonough completed the hat trick 58 seconds into the new half as she headed in a corner kick from Krol.

The Lions added one last goal in the final five minutes as Beth Pagano (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) notched her second of the season.

Keepers Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Amy Hashem (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) combined on the shutout with Clarke recording one save.

In goal for the Presidents, junior Jackie Foltz (Port Royal, PA/Juniata) finished with 12 saves.

For the game, TCNJ outshot the Presidents, 42-2.

#7 Amherst 1, #22 Johns Hopkins University 1 (2OT)
Two overtime wasn't enough to determine a winner between the two nationally-ranked squads.

The Jeffs got on the board first as junior Stephanie Yesnick (Arlington, VA/National Cathedral) took a nice feed from Natalie Ferraiolo (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) and then pushed it past Blue Jay keeper Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick). That goal came 18:43 into the first half.

Johns Hopkins got the goal back 6:43 into the second half as Kim Lane (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) set up Natalie Held (Potomac, MD/Churchill) to knot the score.

The Blue Jays carried the pay in the late stages of regulation and Kate Dunn (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) had a great chance lacing a shot from the top of the penalty area off of the cross bar.

Dunn also had a chance in each overtime with Amherst keeper Lili Ferguson (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) making a nice save on the first off of a direct kick and then the second chance rolled wide.

Amherst's best chance in the overtimes came on a direct kick by Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) that was hauled in by Guszkowski.

Ferguson finished with 10 saves for the Jeffs, while Guszkowski collected three for the Blue Jays.
