TCNJ wins final five weights to edge Centenary, 20-16

Hackettstown, NJ… The College of New Jersey wrestling team rallied for a 20-16 victory over host Centenary College on Wednesday as the 21st-ranked Lions improved to 12-3 on the season.

The Lions won the dual meet as senior Steve Carbone (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) broke a 16-16 tie by scoring a major decision victory at heavyweight. He won his match by the score of 8-0 against Adam Pearsall (Kearny, NJ/Kearny).

Carbone's win was the fifth straight for the Lions after falling behind by the score of 13-0 and then 16-4. Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) started the run with a win by decision at 165 and junior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) followed with another win at 174.

At 184 pounds, Jim Tomczuk (Delran, NJ/Delran) won via a tiebreaker and Shawn Vanwingerden (Wantage, NJ/High Point) won by the score of 6-3 to pull TCNJ even with the Cyclones setting up Carbone's deciding victory.

Freshman John Barnett (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) also earned a win for the Lions scoring a major decision at 149 pounds.

TCNJ returns to the mat on Tuesday, January 29 for its final home dual meet of the season as the Lions host Wilkes University in a 7 p.m. start.
