Box Score

CAMDEN (Oct. 1, 2008) – Sophomore back Matt Lanouette (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) headed in the only goal of the game late in the second half to power the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team over The College of New Jersey, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Wednesday night at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
T
he victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 9-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NJAC, while the Lions fall to 6-5-1 and 2-2.

The game was the latest in a series of one-goal games between the two schools, which haven't played a game decided by more than one goal since Sept. 20, 2000 (a 4-2 TCNJ win). Since then, the teams are 4-4-1 against each other with all the decisions coming by one goal. Both teams have won a pair of 1-0 games and also played to a 1-1 tie since the 2005 season.

Although Rutgers-Camden held a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 12-1 margin in corner kicks, the Scarlet Raptors couldn't find the goal until late in the second half. Lanouette's header at the far post, off a throw-in by freshman Donald Causey (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), found the goal with 10:43 remaining in regulation. It was Lanouette's second goal of the season and his first game-winning tally, while Causey collected his first collegiate assist.

Rutgers-Camden had numerous opportunities, but sent only seven shots on goal. In the first half, the Raptors hit the post on one chance and were thwarted on another opportunity when they had a series of three straight corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Eric Goldwaser (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills) made six saves for TCNJ. Freshman Tim VanLiew (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) needed only one save for the Raptors to earn his fourth career shutout. VanLiew owns a 9-1-1 record, 43 saves and a 0.89 goals-against average while starting all 11 of Rutgers-Camden's games.

Both teams return to action Saturday when they play nationally-ranked NJAC programs. TCNJ hosts No. 24 New Jersey City University at 1 p.m. Rutgers-Camden plays a 2 p.m. game at No. 5 Montclair State University.
