Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team rebounded from a rare conference loss with a strong performance as the Lions shutout visiting Rutgers University-Camden on Wednesday by the score of 3-0.
The win puts the Lions at 2-1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and 6-2-1 overall, while Rutgers-Camden saw its overall record squared at 6-6 and drop to 0-4 in the conference.
TCNJ controlled play for most of the game outshooting the Scarlet Raptors by a 26-3 margin, with only one of those three shots being on goal.
Lion senior Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) scored what turned out to be the eventual game winner midway through the first half as she took a pass from freshman Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick) and drilled a shot into the net. The goal was her fourth of the season.
McCarthy then added her first collegiate goal with 9:46 left before the half intercepting a Scarlet Raptor clearing attempt then putting a shot into upper third of the net just past a diving Natalie Browne (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township).
The hosts added a third goal in the second half as senior Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) slipped behind the Scarlet Raptor and scored on a breakaway.
In goal for the Lions, junior Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) made one save to post her second shutout of the season.
For Rutgers-Camden, Browne finished with seven saves.
The Lions continue NJAC play on Saturday, October 4 heading to New Jersey City University to take on the Gothic Knights in a 1 p.m. start, while Rutgers-Camden is also in action that day returning home to play Montclair State University at 7 p.m.
