Salisbury, MD… Sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) netted her second overtime game-winning goal of the season as The College of New Jersey field hockey team pulled out a big 2-1 victory at Salisbury University on Saturday.
The second-ranked Lions are now 11-1 on the season and are a perfect 7-0 on the road. The loss dropped the ninth-ranked Sea Gulls to 10-3.
Mitchell scored that deciding goal 5:51 into the extra session with an assist from senior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). It was her second goal in overtime in the last three games as she notched one last weekend in a win at Rowan University.
The other two goals in the game came late in the first half with the Sea Gulls striking first when Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, DE/Sussex Tech) scored with 3:45 left before the break.
That lead didn't last long as Reuther scored two minutes later sending the teams into the half deadlocked at a goal apiece.
Goaltender Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) made seven saves for her 11th victory of the season.
TCNJ returns home on Tuesday for its first home game in the month of October as they host Richard Stockton College in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up at 7:30 p.m. in Lions' Stadium.
