Lion men dominate Red Hawks in NJAC opener

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey's men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the new season on Saturday in TCNJ's Aquatic Center hosting New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Montclair State University. TCNJ's men's team posted a 148-128 win to improve to 1-0 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. The Lion women's team added a 193.5-105.5 win as well and are also 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. MSU's men's and women's teams fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC.

TCNJ's men's team opened with a win in the 400 medley relay as senior Mike Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East), senior Ted Yoa (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine), sophomore Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), and rookie Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) recorded a time of 3:37.65 in the event. The team also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:31.11 behind the efforts of sophomore Aaron Moskovich (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), Vernoia, Yoa and junior Chu (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central).

Medvecky won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:57.06, while sophomore Tim Rauch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took second in 10:19.63. Medvecky also took home first in the 500 freestyle in 4:50.39.
Vernoia took the 200 freestyle in 1:45.63, while rookie Ryan Clark took second in 1:49.04. Senior Tom Nawrot (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) won the 50 backstroke in 25.21. Junior Myles O'Connor (Santa Monica, CA) captured the 50 backstroke for the Lions in 27.05 and Yoa took second in 28.19. Yoa won the 100 breaststroke event in 1:02.26, while sophomore Joe Tseng (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) won the 100 backstroke in 55.42 and the 400 individual medley in 4:21.52.

O'Connor won the 50 butterfly in 24.57 to help the Lions continue their sweep on the Red Hawks.
Chu won the 100 butterfly in 54.88. Another first place finish was turned in by the Lions' sophomore Shawn Kirchner (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) as he won the 50 freestyle in 21.93.

Rookie diver TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) won the 1 meter event with a performance of 167.93, while another Lion rookie, freshman Ryan Clarke (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) won the 100 freestyle in 48.97.

For the Red Hawks, senior John Adams (Wharton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) took second in the 50 backstroke in 26.73, as well as second in the 50 freestyle (22.89) and third in the 100 backstroke in 57.92.
Junior Tim Chambrovich (Allenhurst, NJ/Red Bank Regional) picked up second in the 100 butterfly in 55.08 and third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.42.

Freshman diver Chris DuMuro (Ridgewood, NJ/Westwood) took second in the one-meter event with a score of 116.17. 

TCNJ returns to action on Sunday, hosting Stevens on Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m.
