Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey men's soccer team hosted the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon in TCNJ's Soccer Complex. The key NJAC contest saw NJCU come away with a 3-1 win to improve to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the league. TCNJ drops to 6-6-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
TCNJ took an early lead as senior Chris Nelan (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) had a break away and pushed the ball to the left side past the Gothic Knight's keeper, junior Shawn McCormick (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick). The one goal lead lasted until, when NJAC's sophomore Eduardo Tejada (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) connected for his first goal of the season at 19:00.
With the score knotted at 1-1 to open the second half of play, until NJCU was awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box. NJCU's senior Cristhian Acuna (East Newark, NJ/Harrison) took the penalty kick which hit the right side post and freshman Alex Ceron (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) collected the rebound for the score at 73:51 for his third score of the year. Acuna would add an insurance goal for the Gothic Knights as he scored at 84:14 for team-leading his ninth goal on the year.
TCNJ's sophomore goalie Eric Goldwaser (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills) made three saves for the Lions, while McCormick, a converted defender tallied the win after making nine saves and is now 2-0-2.
TCNJ returns to action on October 11 when they will face Messiah College at 7 p.m. on the road, while NJCU hosts City College of New York the same day at 3 p.m.
