Football team falls in season finale to Rowan

Ewing, NJ (11/15/08) – Rowan University grounded out 381 yards rushing yards as the Profs posted a 42-3 victory over the Lions in the season finale on Saturday at Lions' Stadium.

The meeting was the 50th in the all-time series between the rivals, with the Profs holding a 32-16-2 edge, having now claimed nine of the last 11 meetings. The Lions capped the season with a mark of 4-6 and 4-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while Rowan kept its post-season hopes alive at 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

The Profs were led on the ground by junior running back Ryan Leafey (Westville, NJ/Deptford) as he ran for 159 yards on 19 carries, while quarterback Frank Wilczynski (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) collected 151 yards on 12 rushes. Wilczynski was also efficient through the air connecting on 12-of-22 for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

In all, the Profs held a 533-161 advantage in total yards.

Junior Chase Misiura (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) led TCNJ in rushing with 58 yards and also led the team with 35 yards receiving.

Rowan posted the only score in the opening quarter, as Wilczynski lofted a pass to the near corner of the end zone that receiver Marcus Lee (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) came down with from 16 yards. Kicker Mark Getsinger (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) tacked on the extra point, making it a 7-0 Prof lead.

The guests added to that lead in the second exploding for 17 points. The first of those points came via a 21-yard field goal by Getsinger, followed by a nine-yard run by Wilczynski with 8:13 showing on the clock. Rowan struck again 53 seconds later as Malcolm Dock (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) returned an interception 53 yards for a score. Getsinger added the extra points after each touchdown bringing the score to 24-0.

The Lions got on the board on the final play of the half as junior Marc Zucconi (Marlton, NJ/Holy Spirit) drilled a career-long 49-yard field goal.

Getsinger accounted the lone points in the third quarter as he was successful on a 30-yard field goal bumping Rowan's lead to 27-3.

In the fourth, the Profs reached the end zone twice with Derek Piccini (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial) catching a 12-yard pass and Stephen Hevalow (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) scoring on a one-yard run.

Defensively for the Lions, junior Ryan Flannery (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) led the team with 11 tackles, including one for a loss, while Shawn Brown (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) and Phil Gatti (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) each finished with 10.

For Rowan, Drew Yezzi (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) had seven tackles and an interception, while Jimmy DiPaolo (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) also had seven stops.
