Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's basketball team hosted the No. 12 ranked Saints of Marymount University on Sunday afternoon in Packer Hall. The Lions would come away with a convincing 66-49 win to improve to 5-3 on the year, while the loss was the first of the year for Marymount as they drop to 5-1.
TCNJ came out to open the contest on an 8-0 run and held Marymount scoreless for the first three minutes of the match-up before MU scored. Marymount would pull within five points in the first stanza before the Lions opened their lead to a 31-20 margin at the break.
Leading the way in the first half was junior guard
Karen Lassoni (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) as she poured in a career-high 10 points and was 4-4 from the floor with a 2-2 effort from three-point range. By game's end, Lassoni had racked 12points. Sophomore guard
Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) added a personal best 12 points as well to lead the Lions to the home win, while sophomore
Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) led all players with her 13 points.
Senior
Alyssa Michella (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) added six points in the first half as the Lions held the Saints to 25.0% shooting from the floor (7-28) and forced 12 first half turnovers. By game's end, Michella finished eight points.
MU's junior Meredith Levinson (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway) led her team in the first half of play as she had eight points and finished with a team-high 11 points.
Junior Kathleen Brown (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) would foul out of the contest with 7:01 left to play and the Saints, trailing 47-39. She finished with nine points and six rebounds. Senior Kathryn Wilson (Richmond, VA/Saint Gertrude) and Levinson each finished in double digits scoring as Wilson added 10 points. Sophomore Beth Wiggins (Burke, NY/Franklin Academy) added 12 rebounds after hauling down 10 defensive rebounds with three blocked shots and three assists.
TCNJ's senior center
Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) finished with eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds with five blocks. She now has 963 career points at TCNJ and is poised to become the 12th women's player to join the 1,000 point club at The College.
A year ago, Marymount handed the Lions an 81-73 loss in Arlington, VA.
TCNJ's next contests will be on the road in Phoenix, Arizona as the Lions travel to the Grand Canyon Trip Sports Classic. The Lions will face Lesley College on December 29 and the University of LaVerne on December 30. Marymount returns to action later this week in the Crusin' Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with a pair of games, Wednesday and Thursday.
