TCNJ takes second at Spartan Invitational

Tyler Branham placed second at 149 pounds.

York, PA… The College of New Jersey wrestling team crowned four champions at the Spartan Invitational hosted by York College on Saturday and finished second in the team standings.

TCNJ, ranked 15th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll trailed only third-ranked Delaware Valley College.

The Lions earned their first title at 149 pounds as third-seeded John Barnett (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) slipped past teammate Tyler Branham (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny) 5-3 in overtime. Barnett finished the tournament with 5-0 record.

At 157 pounds, freshman Joe Falco (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) went a perfect 4-0 beating Heidelberg's Ryan Thomas 12-3 in the finals, while Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) added valuable team points by placing third in that weight class.

TCNJ's run of champions continued at 165 pounds as sophomore Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) swept his way through his weight class winning all four of his bouts. His second win of the day was his 50th in his brief career at TCNJ.

The final top finish for the Lions was at 174 pounds as senior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) remained undefeated on the season doubling up Delaware State University's Kyle Skinner in the finals. For the season, Osgoodby is an impressive 18-0.

Freshman Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) placed second at 197 for TCNJ, while two other Lions were third in their respective weight classes including Kyle Kinchen (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) at 125 and Bill Tenpenny (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) at 141. Adding fourth-place finishes were Anthony Rizzolo (Wenonah, NJ/Deptford) at 141 and Adam Koziol (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) at 197.

The Lions are off until December 28 and 29 when they head to Florida for the two-day Sunshine Open.
