Softball teams splits at Salisbury Invitational

Salisbury, MD… The College of New Jersey softball team earned a win over Ithaca College (9-4) in the first game of the Salisbury University Invitational. In the final game of the round robin event, TCNJ dropped a 6-2 decision to the host Sea Gulls of Salisbury. TCNJ now stands at 8-6 on the season.

The Lions struck early adding three runs in the bottom of the first inning and four in the bottom of the third innings to jump out to 7-0 lead. The Bombers came up with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lions triumphed as sophomore Rachel Greeby (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and sophomore Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor, NJ/Oakcrest) drove in three runs each. Greeby was 3-4 at the plate.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) picked up the win to improve to 5-2 after she gave up three earned runs off four hits, while striking out two. Freshman Jamie Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) closed the game out for the Lions, working two innings with an unearned run off one hit with a strikeout in her eighth appearance.

Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lions pulled with in one run in the top of the third and tied the action in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Kelly Armstrong (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) collected a solo homerun in the third inning, her first as a Lion, while adding the tying run in the fifth after reaching on a fielders choice and eventually scoring on a wild pitch by Salisbury's Kortni Pedlow.

Salisbury would break the 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lions committed two errors.

TCNJ's sophomore Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) was 2-3 at the plate, while Armstrong scored two runs and was 1-2 at the plate. Freshman Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) suffered the loss and is now 1-1 after she worked 5.1 innings with four earned runs off three hits with five strikeouts. Minervini came in and worked 2/3 of an inning and gave up one earned run off two hits for TCNJ.
