Clermont, FL… The College of New Jersey's softball team opened the 2008 campaign on a losing note as the Lions were swept by the University of Rochester in a doubleheader on Saturday in Clermont, FL.
TCNJ fell by the score of 5-4 in the opener as the Yellow Jackets plated all five runs in the final two innings and then dropped the second game by the score of 3-2.
The Lions will be right back in action on Sunday as they play two more games. TCNJ will play Penn State Behrend at 9:30 a.m. and then face Daniel Webster College at 11:30.
Game 1: Rochester 5, TCNJ 4
The Yellow Jackets scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and then scored the game-winning run with one out in the last of the seventh to spoil TCNJ's season opener.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) pitched well in the loss allowing five hits and only two of the five runs allowed were earned. She also struck out nine batters.
At the plate, freshman Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) belted a triple and drove in a run, while senior Lauren Musacchia (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) also drove in a run with a base hit.
Game 2: Rochester 3, TCNJ 2
The Lions also led early in the second game scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as sophomore Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) and freshman Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) each drove in runs with hits.
The Yellow Jackets got one of the runs back in the second before scoring a pair in the sixth to pull out the victory.
Sophomore Rachel Greeby (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) paced the Lions at the plate with a pair of hits and also scored a run.
Sietsma went five innings on the mound for the Lions and allowed two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts, while Jamie Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) gave up one run in two innings to suffer the loss.
