Mary Washington ends TCNJ's tourney run, 56-50

Fredericksburg, VA…The College of New Jersey saw its season come to a close in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Tournament as the Lions fell at fourth-ranked University of Mary Washington by the score of 56-50 on Saturday.

The Lions held a six-point advantage in the early stages of the second half, but the host Eagles put together a 19-3 run to take a 40-30 lead and never relinquished that lead.

TCNJ finished its successful season with a record of 22-7, with those victories being the most by the Lions since the 2000-01 season when they had 25.

The Lions are now 11-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament play in 11 appearances. Mary Washington (28-2) has now won consecutive games over TCNJ in the tournament, also ending the team's season in 2006.

The Eagles held a decisive advantage from the foul line in the game making 23-of-38 attempts, while the Lions made only six of their 15 shots from the stripe.

It was a game of runs as well in the first half as the Lions opened the scoring as senior Sara Best (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) knocked down a jump shot, but the Eagles stormed back scoring the next 10 points for a 10-2 lead.

TCNJ came right back with the 7-0 spurt making it a one-point game before regaining the lead at 16-15 on a shot by sophomore Alexandra Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels). The teams remained close until the break when the Lions went into the intermission holding a 23-19 advantage. TCNJ's defense held Mary Washington scoreless for the final 5:39 of the half.

Gregorek led the Lions with 12 points and added six rebounds, while Best chipped in with 11 points. Junior Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was held to single digits for only the second time this season finishing with eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
